Year 8 History Up-Close Incursion

On May 7, Year 8 students participated in the ‘History Up-Close’ incursion highlighting life in the Middle Ages – an activity designed to help the students gain further understanding into the period of history they are studying in Humanities. Our visitors, Robert, Gina, and Will from the History Up-Close team, were medieval reenactors who specialise in all aspects of medieval life.

During the incursion the year 8 boys were able to dress in period clothing under the instruction of Gina. This allowed the students to experience the daily life of members of all walks of society. Robert played musical instruments of the Middle Ages, and sang medieval songs in middle English and Latin, which captivated the boys. This was followed by several members of the audience attempting to play instruments on their own.

The students also had the opportunity to play games from the medieval period and get up close and personal with the arms and armour of that era. Some of the boys were then able to be kitted-up as a soldier of the Middle Ages, wearing mail shirts and steel helmets. Coached by Robert and Will – who first demonstrated a professional sword fight to their audience - our cohort were then able to fight against each other using rubber swords in matched pairs.

Overall the event was a wonderful experience and one that will not easily be forgotten.
